Description

The Palacio Real of Spain, an opulent jewel-box, is now used for only a few royal ceremonies. The royal family moved out of the palace and into the more modest Palacio de la Zarzuela many years ago. In 1734, the alcázar (Muslim fortress) was destroyed in a fire, leaving Felipe V, the first of the Bourbon kings, to build an even larger palace. His grand plans, however, were never fully realized – as he passed away before its completion. The Italianate baroque colossus stands today with only 2800 rooms, only a quarter of its intended design.
