Description

The third star on the Paseo del Arte

The Reina Sofía is the third jewel in Madrid's artistic crown and the first wow factor is the building itself. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, its soaring metallic roof and bold glass and steel form takes the breath away.

The Reina Sofía gallery contains many works by the greats of Spanish contemporary art – Dalí, Tàpies Miró, González – but it's worth visiting just to see Picasso's Guernica, the undisputed star of the show. The Queen Sofia Arts Center was opened by Queen Sofía in 1986 in the former San Carlos Hospital on the Plaza Atocha. The museum is Madrid's newest center for contemporary art. From the outside the building looks to be of monumental proportions due to its heritage. It was built in the late 18th Century as a hospital, but stood empty for many years until it was decided to transform it into a museum. Totally renovated now, the contemporary art displayed here is on a par with any in the world.
