Description

A hidden jewel of fabulous wealth

A lesser known attraction of Madrid is the beautiful Monasterio de las Descalzas Reales. In the 16th century, the monastery became a recluse for women of noble blood, some brought fabulous dowries in their quest for sisterhood. The monastery became the richest in the land, and a Hapsburg jewel.

By the mid-20th century the monastery became a sheltered for poor women, though it still contained a priceless collection of art treasures. Forbidden to sell these riches, the sisters literally starved. The state intervened and the Pope granted special permission to transform the place into a museum. Now visitors have the opportunity to glimpse behind the walls of what became one of the most mysterious places in Madrid. Many priceless works of art and jewels are still on display.
